Sorry to state the bleeding obvious, but why would any airline invest such a huge amount in the project, if it wasn't going to make any money?
I know in America there are a lot of routes that are operated loss making for prestige/defensive purposes, but fortunately BA have avoided these traps by actually running their airline like a business.
