Nicely streamlined experience at NATS and seems to take a lot less time than Gatwick, although obviously if you're in the area then just head to Gatwick.
Surrey, class 1 only needs done in good time for all the paperwork prior to course start dates. Suppose if you get it done earlier then there are no nasty surprises, although you may find you end up having to pay for the renewal yourself if it's due before a course start date, if successful.
LadyL2013, the medical you're referring to is a separate thing, not the class 1.
