The German use of cellars as air raid shelters was fine until the authorities in cities such as Dresden came up with the bright idea of knocking down the walls between cellars so that the occupants would not be trapped if the house above collapsed. Unfortunately, the tunnels thus created also made it possible for the fumes from fires above to travel along from cellar to cellar, causing very many more deaths from suffocationi
