hoover1: recruitment as Direct Entry Captain:
  • Fluent in English to ICAO level 4 or above.
  • Hold a ICAO ATPL certificate.
  • Hold a 1st Class Medical certificate from ICAO.
  • Eligible for a UAE residency visa.
  • At least 5,000 hours total flying time.
Already type rated on B737:
  • B737-300 to -900 endorsed within the last 24 months.
  • At least 1500 hours as a Captain on a multi-crew, multi-engine aircraft in excess of 10 tonnes operating weight.
  • At least 1000 hours as a Captain of B737-300 to 900 (NG/EFIS) type aircraft.
  • Will be bonded for 24,000 USD, amortised over 3 years.
Non type rated on B737:
  • At least 1500 hours as a Captain on modern (EFIS), multi-crew, multi-engine aircraft over 55 tonnes operating weight.
  • Will be bonded for 36,000 USD, amortised over 3 years.
The above are the minimum criteria to allow one to apply as a DEC... and one would also be assessed accordingly (i.e. assessed as a Captain) throughout the recruitment phase. The requirements and recruitment process is described on flydubai.com.

Nb. Most of FZ's DEC's readily exceed the above requirements.

Imho, it would not be unreasonable to suggest that perhaps the reason for the F/O to Captain upgrade seemingly being so rigorous is that, for a good number of those F/O's, this is their first ever Command (of anything bigger than a light aircraft) and, as mentioned previously, FZ's area of operation include some significantly challenging routes, amongst other reasons.
