The young lady, only 17, like the rest of her family were sleeping in temporary quarters while their house was undergoing major building works.... My kids slept in caravans on our farm in Devon to free up their bedrooms for Bed and Breakfast guests, the only reliable crop back in 1977....

And how unlikely is it that the big tree in front of your house in London will be the one to land on your house, causing a gas leak that then causes three houses to disintegrate?
And how unlikely is it that only one old duffer will leave the planet because he was out driving in very unsuitable weather? Only one? Amazing, considering several hundred trees fell on the railway lines, and a lot of homes were without electricity....
All in all, the forecasters got it right. (Unlike Michael Fish) The authorities took sensible precautions.
For five people, including the 14 year old boy who was swept out to sea, fate was the hunter....makes no sense at all, any of it.
A footnote to this ramble: all those trees on the line leaving rail passengers stranded is not exactly an advertisement for the new HS boondoggle...at least on the roads you can detour around it....
