Well the A321neo and 737MAX will offer the range American carriers need to fly trans-con and these days it seems to be a case of frequency over capacity - for exmaple AA are upping LAX-JFK to x10 daily.
Sadly the 757's are a niche aircraft these days and there are probably only a handful of flights worldwide where the 757's range and capacity is needed. BHX-EWR is one of them but if their recent performances continue and given the better economics one would assume that a correctly configured 787 would be the ideal replacement.
