BUT Nigel if you live in Stoke the same hassle applies to M6 Southbound. Just North of Birmingham the M6 is completely clogged with road works where the new gantrys are going up. There is no escape here because coming off means traversing Birmingham City centre.
You can take the toll road of course which I personally prefer despite outrageous cost and quite a detour.
If heading North you can at least route via A34 Congleton without much trouble, certainly won't take 7.5 hours !
Living in North Staffs you can of course route Ashbourne, Leek Macclesfield, a glorious run......
