I would be far more impressed by someone doing some "flying hippy/mid-life thing" getting their PPL and pointing a plane east and away on their own, especially if unplanned - sorting the permits etc along the way.
Happens all the time, though is not publicized. I know people who have flown transatlantic, people who have flown to Australia etc....Ferry pilots do it all the time as well.
To be fair to Carol V though, a flight from New Jersey to Barbados is not in the same league. It is a fairly straight forward flight with most of it being in US airspace.
