For all the spin and hype yesterday, Aerlingus' Long haul operation at Shannon will still be less than it was during the 707 area. Irish airports apart from Dublin have been struggling for the last 5 years and tend to turn every change of schedule by an airline into a major news story.

We had similar hype in Knock yesterday about the so called 4 Connacht Final Specials by Ryanair which turned out to be the existing flights with one extra Stansted flight thrown in to the mix.

New routes are heralded in with a blaze of glory while routes that are dropped are buried without a mention. It's a clever marketing technique but ultimately the end of year passenger figure and financial results tell the true story.
