This additional bonus is just for fighter pilots, not all USAF pilots.

It might just have something to do with the recent (within the past 2-3 years) voluntary separation program where USAF paid folks, including pilots, to leave.

Along with drastically curtailing the numbers of pilots finishing training who went to fighters since the demand was for UAV/RPA drivers as well as the drawdown in numbers of fast jets as well.

Combined with endless rotations to sandy places while the age 65 clock for the airlines counts down.

What could possibly go wrong with voluntarily thinning the herd while not raising replacements?
