Sounds like a fishy story to me. Radar in those days wasn't that good in those old aircraft. In 1952 The ASV Mk 7 radar on the maritime version of the Lincoln was lucky to pick up a surfaced sub at 20 miles or a snorkel at 5 miles if I recall.
