It's a filtering process indeed! A bench-mark will be set and if you score below it you will indeed, be discarded. Not exactly a proven method of getting the right people for the job but I guess it's a big airline now and interviewing 1000's of people isn't practical! I was there when it had 737's and James McBride so don't take my word for it!
