Aircraft specific welkyboy. You can do it simultaneously in most aircraft. Yes the key is to lower the AOA of the wings by pushing forward on the stick, but recovery works best with immediate power.

He wont be doing his PPL in a Hawk Trainer!! (unless I suppose its a different type of aircraft with the same name...)
