Thanks for the info. The problem solved itself. I did try to shut down Skype but no response nor by trying to call up the task manager as nothing happened. The laptop stayed on. Maybe there was a connection with an update for Win 7. This wanted to restart the confuser but could not, next day (19th) it succeeded in forcing a shutdown and now Skpe behaves OK.
