Oh, and the ceiling was 800 ft even though the tower called it clear and had less than 2 minutes to set up an NDB approach when they said the VOR approach was inop. I was a reserve captain with less than 500 hrs in a 727 in any seat. Thank God for corporate flying and charter flying when that was normal. I had to ask them to verify we were cleared for the VOR approach when they said it was inop even though we were using it fine. Retirement is wonderful.
