the preferred method was for the Flight Engineer to go down into the nose and to kick the clutch plates round until they dropped into engagement.
Don’t you just love the complexities of old fashioned autopilots. I can see it now - someone crawls under the co-pilot rudder pedals to get to the nose and kicks the autopilot in the c(l)rutch with his flying boot. Autopilot now checked serviceable, captain
