I've just heard the aircraft was heavily fueled by the crew and turned west
when it got airborne...
Yep! the aircraft first headed for the Flag Det at Nellis. I understand that the success of the Gov't funding for compensation for service personnel in Cyprus rested on the choice "Red or Black".
