Couple of pointers (based on recent experience)

- Make sure it's not nicked

- Get an invoice/receipt.

Why? If you need to contact the support dept. of the manufacturer, i.e. HP in my case, then proof of purchase is essential.

Moral: don't offer to help someone with their PC when you know that someone is likely to have dabbled in the black market.
