I agree with you about instructors; I ended up asking to fly with someone else as I didn't trust mine - there was more too it than this, but I think that's where it started...when I found out I mean. As for your hover; it'll take you a few hours, but that's more likely to be a few shortish sessions at the end of other exercises, though schools vary on this. You simply can't practise hovering for that long; it's too intense and you tense up and it's counter productive. So it doesn't actually take that long...but it'll feel like longer than it is!
And, of course, people vary, and how long it takes doesn't have much to do with how good a pilot you are in the long run.
