Hi NSEU,
To scavenge the centre on the hydromechanical style aircraft you don't have to run the engines or apu. You can just turn on the 2 and/or 3 main boost pumps and will achieve the same result.
Running the apu will also turn on these pumps automatically and also result in the same effect.
