I reckon NutherA2 is spot on.
My question is why did Trenchard dislike monoplanes because apparently it was often snaffled by Aces like McCudden as their personal transport. The RFC didn't like it so Trenchard had his way and put back British fighter design quite a few years.
Also the first aircraft to cross the Andes btw.
