Is this because this was one of the earlier EC 120s..? Arrius 2Fs..?
TBO is determined by the specific modification status of the engine modules, not the age. If the modules have had the relevant modifications carried out the engine will be subject to a 3000 hour TBO.

Later powerplants will obviously leave the production line with more recent modifications embodied at build, thus they will have a higher TBO by default.

From the info, do you think the engine just had an inspection or an actual overhaul..?
I can't remember the exact wording from the TM Service Letter, but it states that the overhaul calendar will be reset if "suitable repair work is carried out" (or words to that effect) . Only the calendar is reset by suitable repair work though, not the hour figure.

If it had an overhaul both the hour and calendar figure would be reset. As the hour figure has not, then it would suggest to me only a "suitable" repair was carried out.

The nature of the work carried out should be clearly indicated with the engine log cards, as should all embodied modifications. Clearly ascertain the mod state and cross refer it to Arrius 2F SL No. 2169.
