Drifting away somewhat, but reinforcements for the Middle East during the N Africa campaign were ferried through the Takoradi (W Africa) route, ie a cross very inhospitable terrain with virtually no support and primative airsrips, it would be interesting to know what the failure/accident rate was for that exercise.
