Don't give up. The Islander is not such a good option as what you read is correct. You will need a substantial amount of hours on the plane before being hired.
Meanwhile, you can be hired as a F/O on Twin Otter with about 250 hours and the type rating from Flight Safety. As a matter of fact I know someone who got his first job that way.
