I dont`think anyone thought they were the same aircraft??? But they are the only four engine super wide body jets in production so comparisen is valid I think.
Generations [and grandfathers] apart
The 747-8 is the latest generation of the Jumbo so they are the same generation in terms of technology, design, engines, systems and aerodynamics.
Time will tell
The A380 has many commitments and orders made when the fuel dynamic was very different. Boeing was punting the -8 in a different climate and the order books reflect that but sadly I suspect the future lies with pilotless twins
