Must admit I have not read all of it, but Annex A (Comments) page A7 at the bottom:
An iPhone or similar device is not considered adequate backup due to the size of the screen
Now if you had a nice big 4.8 incher, you'd be OK!
The other issue is whether Baswell and gang is a "CASA approved provider" (CAAP section 6.4).
Equally, I can use my iPad on a knee-dock during ALL phases of flight, provided I am satisfied that it does not pose an interference risk.
