I have never understood this - since all the traffic you are likely to collide with will be EXACTLY on the c/line with RNAV etc, it seems 1/2 mile rt is a good place to be?.
My Honeywell FMS won't accept an offset of 0.5nm.
Stay on route unless you get a clearance.
