The problem was that they did not belong to the RAF Museum. They were still owned by BA who no longer wished to pay for their upkeep.
Same applies to the Concordes. The 'museums' have to do all the 'upkeep', though I understand G-BOAD got some help from BA when its nose was sheared off after being parked in a dumb place allowing an HGV to hit it.
