Yes the defect has to be written in the Tech Log (CASA approved Alternate Maintenance Release), but the Maintenance Release only "ceases to be in force" if it is a Major Defect.
Like it or not, that is the Australian Regulation.

If it is a minor defect the aircraft may be flown.
