Sandy and the internet

Just as a heads up for the natives of PPRuNeland, there is a possibility of some disruption later today to internet traffic given New York's status as a major internet hub there may be some internet disruption later on given the restrictions on diesel distribution meaning that some data centre tanks may not get filled up once they've depleted their present stock.

So just thought I'd get the word out before a flood of posts asking "why can't I access website X ?'. Most major websites will have a mirrored setup at a geographically diverse location, but they might be affected by extra loadings.

Similarly, there are alternative fibre routes, but again will be affected by loadings (and increased natural latency due to your traffic having to take the long way round in some cases).

Hopefully the overall impact will be relatively low, and I wish the New Yorkers all the best in their recovery.
