I'm sure you're right - my
source states it was re-engined with three Wright Whirlwind J-5s just before it stalled in a turn while on a test flight carrying a fuel load intended to get it across the Atlantic. The subsequent crash killed its crew of Commander Noel Davis and Lieutenant Stanton Wooster of the US Navy.
Your picture shows part of the aircraft's name & sponsor "American Legion".
