CB, you obviously have a clear understanding of what really happened, and I really don't need to budge you on that. Just a couple of questions then. Didn't the jackets go on during the instrument approach phase? And were they doing orbits?
I don't know. If so, I certainly think it unwise because it would be even more disorienting! Most of the near and actual unintentional controlled flights into the sea I know about have been in straight line descents. If performed in a turn they are (pretty much) always fatal.
