Strange.
When I wanted to join the RAF, I wrote to .... the RAF.
I asked what they wanted.
I read everything they sent me,
did that....
and got in!
I think my favourite was a mother asking us (school CCF) to help her son get to Lympstone on the train.
"Ma,am, if he can't make it to the depot on his own, I doubt the Marines will want him."
