sad stories about USB ports falling apart
I use USB port extenders (v. cheap) that remain plugged into the USB sockets on desktop PCs, and devices are then plugged into the extenders. Very little wear & tear on the computer sockets.
Long extenders to present USB from the rear of the desktop and short for the front.
