Use of "charity" status and public donations or local sponsorship money for poorly researched equipment and extravagent vehicles is sadly not new.
Many organisations' research before purchasing the right aircraft is sadly lacking and the real costs are often nothing like advertised.
This should probably be wound down or new "owners" or management put into place.
