If you feel you must have updates, then fairynuff, but when I got my XP SP2 machine wot I'm typing on now, one of the first things I did was turn them off.
In eight years it's never had an update (M$ variety) and it seems to be surviving.........
I bet the folks that you share files and E-mail with might be a tad worried now
