I have read and heard that the Packard built engines, built to mass production automobile standards, was easier to assemble and more reliable then the Rolls version.
There is an interesting anecdote in Stanley Hooker's autobiography "Not Much of an Engineer", about Packard engineers telling Rolls Royce engineers that their drawings were not precise enough.
