In general, I find that people who I don't know are reluctant to start conversations in a pub. So I don't like going to the pub by myself - I'd rather go into the chat room, where I can usually (but not always) find some conversation.
On the other hand, if I'm with friends, I'd never go into chat... it's very anti-social. The pub wins hands-down if I'm with other people, or if I know that there will be someone I know at the pub.
