Well there are a lot of wanabees in your situation and there is NO best way for flying as a commercial pilot, all solutions will get you to achieve your dream provided you keep it up !!. If you like flying enough you can join the military, it does not cost a penny and is good fun (from what I've been told).
I don't know the situation in the States but here in Europe some airlines recruit cadets and get them trained from ZERO to ATPL level, this is obviously tough competition.
If you've tried the above and don't get anywhere you can try the self improver route, the one I'm on
