Nutts corner had a steep approach and there were two fatal crashes in the 1950s. At the time the right angled and longer runways at Aldergrove seemed a better option. In the 70s this was definitely the case with the Tridents. Noise was also a consideration - the Trident 3s with afterburners could be heard easily in Antrim.
