The coalition government has announced plans to permit foreign airlines to pick up passengers at Gatwick Airport, Stansted Airport and Luton Airport on routes to North America. This move was included in the draft aviation strategy and could benefit airline passengers by lowering transatlantic ticket prices. Liberalisation in the market – which implements what is known as the Fifth Freedoms in the aviation industry – is seen as a way to particularly improve links with destinations in the Far East, turning unprofitable routes into viable ones.
