"A search is underway off the coast of Broome in Western Australia, after reports that a light plane is missing.
Police believe the twin-engine aircraft went down in the water off Cable Beach after taking off from Broome airport on Wednesday.
Emergency services have launched an air-and-sea search for the plane and its pilot, who is understood to have been flying alone.
Authorities are searching an area between 300-800 metres off cable beach.
Acting Senior Sergeant Dave Walker says authorities have been in discussion with witnesses.
"Witnesses around the area observed lights - maybe signals from the plane - entering the bay off the end of the runway and at the moment we have no communication with that plane," he said.
A nearby beachside concert, attended by more than a thousand people, was stopped to allow the rescue to get underway but later resumed.
Police have set up a command post at the local surf club."
