Shortly before the Gnat "touched" down there was an exchange on the r/t between the pilot and ATC. Something along the lines of three requests from the controller to confirm that the aircraft was "gear down" before a landing clearance was granted; the pilot reluctantly confirmed as such. Only a theory, but he may have been a bit miffed at this intrusive interrogation and possibly distracted by it, thus his less than ideal configuration.
