I once had to persuade a Grenadier Guards Major that sitting in his Land-Rover while we flew it underslung to the final battle of his annual exercise (so he could point the way for me
) was not a very safe idea. "But I do have a pair of goggles and I'll wear my seat belt!", said he.
I explained that Land-Rovers spun round and round on the end of the strop so he'd get dizzy and in any event I couldn't see him hanging under the helicopter.
That didn't really put him off so I told him how, in the event of engine failure, I'd have to pickle off the load; after which he decided to drive instead.
