There is a very good thread on the Sukhoi SuperJet story on Rumors and News. It is a very tragic news indeed. Hopefully, there may be a small chance of some survivors yet whom may be able to tell the story. It is hardly a type of aircraft Cork will have any chance of getting a visit from in the years ahead though it is a fairly credible alternative to the ERJ 190 series. If Malev had survived and ever thought of returning to the Budapest Cork market there might have been a chance of a SuperJet visit - that will not happen now, alas.

Today has been quite a day for the airport at snn with the media going to town on their being awarded independent, debt free status from the DAA by Transport Minister Varadkar.

Where will this leave Cork Airport as snn will have a far more clearer competitive edge at least in the short term. If snn cuts costs more than Cork Airport can and cuts wages or eliminate jobs entirely there is a risk to Cork losing some of it's precious traffic to it's competitor on the west coast in the form of more attractive short term hello type incentivising which Ryanair were able to take so much advantage of for a while up to a couple of years ago.

Much food for thought now for Cork Airport and the folk that are charged with running it on a day to day basis. If they are interested, of course.

Like with The Skibbereen Eagle - a beady eye will be needed.
