I don't have clue about the Airbus but could he have created a waypoint on the other side of the World and the machine was attempting to fly 'through' the Earth to get to it? Clearly the distance to the waypoint is a give away but it is possible on at least some Boeings, so it might be possible on the 'Bus. Of course, I would never condone such misbehaviour!
