I know you're not the only person to
voice such concerns. I also know an approach was made to the Aussie ABC to see if they'd be interested in investigating further (4Corners or similar) but nothing came of it.
Whilst I wasn't in the region at the time, from first hand accounts of others who were, I believe that the hypothesis is not without merit.
