What did your TRI say?
He said that when you're visual, disconnect the autopilot and re-position the aircraft where you want it to be. It certainly makes sense in a way, and easing off on the descent rate doesn't seem very dangerous to me (unlike trying to establish from a hot & high approach below 500 ft). But then again it somewhat conflicts with the SOP manual for what is called stabilized. However, the way it's worded in the SOP manual doesn't make it a clear cut either as to whether continuing is acceptable or not. Hence the reason I was asking for a general opinion from a wider audience. The next TRI/TRE may be of a different opinion.
