LHR does rather more than 44 takes off and landings per hour on a usual day.
LHR's
record hourly rate was 99 movements an hour - so that's about 45 take offs and 45 landings. The normal maximum is 84 an hour - 42 of each. It is bad wording in the article that does not make clear that it is 36 of
EACH type of movement ie 72 total movements an hour. LHR has reduced movement rates in the middle of the day (firebreaks) to allow for clearing accumulated delays. Therefore an
average rate of 72 seems reasonable if unscheduled movements are removed.
Even LGW can get it to 50 an hour.
LGW's normally operates up to 56 an hour (28 of each type). Record was 62 movements in one hour.
