On my first visit to Offut, in 1962, I was assured that the B36, though not flown, was fully servicable and had a war target. It was one of the conditions laid by General Le May when approved of the preservation of the aircraft.

"There are no free lunches in SAC."

Presumably if WW III broke out it would be fully fuelled and armed, a collection of generals and colonels would climb in and blunder off across the Pacific. By the time they reached anywhere all the flashes and bangs would have finished so they would have ended up in Outer Mongolia with a load of Vulcan aircrew.

Looking back I think it was a pack of lies.
